Is My Child Actually Ready to Live at College?

The Question

“My child is leaving for college soon. Academically, I know they're ready, but I still remind them about laundry, meals, appointments, deadlines, and things around the house. How do I know if they're ready to live on their own?”

The Answer

College readiness isn't just about academics.

For many students, college is the first time they're responsible for everything at once: laundry, meals, cleaning, assignments, medications, money, sleep, work, friendships, and living with another person.

That's a lot.

The good news? Independent living is a skill, and skills can be practiced.

Before move-in, try stepping back for a couple of weeks. Let your student manage their own laundry, schedule, meals, spending, waking up, responsibilities, and downtime.

Parents, think of it as moving from manager to consultant.

Instead of reminding them what needs to be done, give them a chance to develop their own systems and experience a few low-stakes mistakes while they're still at home.

Don't Forget the Roommate Part

Being a thoughtful roommate is a skill, too.

Before move-in, students should be prepared to talk about things like:

  • Cleaning and shared spaces
  • Sleep schedules and alarms
  • Guests and overnight visitors
  • Food and borrowing belongings
  • Noise and study time
  • Privacy and boundaries
  • How they'll bring up a problem when something isn't working

A roommate doesn't have to become a best friend. But both people need to be able to communicate, compromise, and respect each other's space.

Tenacious Takeaway

The goal isn't to send a student to college who never needs help.

It's to send a student who can manage the basics, recognize when they're overwhelmed, solve some problems independently, and know when and how to ask for help.
